How to Improve QB Accuracy
Practical drills and coaching tips to help youth quarterbacks improve throwing accuracy and ball placement.
Accuracy Is the #1 QB Skill
Of all the skills a quarterback needs, accuracy matters most. A strong arm means nothing if the ball isn't placed where the receiver can catch it in stride. The good news: accuracy is a trainable skill.
Top Accuracy Drills
Target Accuracy Station
Set targets at different heights and distances. Throw 3 balls at each, aiming for the center. This builds consistent ball placement.
Bucket Accuracy Challenge
Place a bucket at 10, 15, and 20 yards. Throw with touch and arc to land balls inside. Sharpens feel and placement.
Moving Target Throws
Have a partner run routes (slant, out, corner). Throw to lead them so they catch in stride. Develops lead-throw accuracy.
Coaching Tips for Better Accuracy
- Focus on the target — Your eyes should be on the target, not the ball
- Smooth release — Don't rush. A smooth, repeatable motion is more accurate
- Follow through — Your thumb should point down after release
- Set your feet — Accuracy starts with a balanced throwing base
- Use touch — Not every throw needs max velocity. Learn to layer the ball
Common Accuracy Killers
- Throwing off-balance — Feet not set
- Staring down the receiver — Defender reads your eyes
- Late release — Ball arrives after the window closes
- No follow-through — Ball sails or wobbles
